Kenya Presidential Election Supreme Court Verdict Explanation 20 September 2017

The Supreme Court of Kenya explained the reasons why the Kenya Presidential Election held on 8 August 2017 was “neither transparent or verifiable” and hence had to be nullified.

The Supreme Court of Kenya put the blame on Kenya’s electoral commission the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The result for the Presidential elections were announced without verifying the information and 11,000 polling stations were yet to declare their results or received.

The Daily Nation (Nairobi) 20 September 2017 quotes the Supreme Court “Irregularities and illegalities in the poll were many, systematic and deliberate, say three court judges.”

The BBC (Nairobi) has been keeping a close eye on the elections, with Alastair Leithead (BBC Africa Correspondent) being interviewed by the BBC World Service (Radio). Online they cover the Supreme Court of Kenya’s explanation via an article. ‘Kenya’s Supreme Court criticises IEBC electoral commission.‘ BBC Africa (20 September 2017).

The Standard (Nairobi) 20 September 2017 leads with an article by Mercy Asamba ‘Reasons Why Presidential Election was declared invalid, court give full verdict.’

The overall explanation why the Supreme Court nullified was damning – A sad day for Kenya’s Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), but a proud day for the Constitution and the Supreme Court of Kenya.
